Von Eschenbach nomination to head FDA already mired in 'Plan B' politics.(Regulatory Report)

No sooner did President Bush nominate Acting FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach March 15 to permanently head the agency than Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) announced they would place a hold on the nomination.

"We will place a hold on the nomination of Dr. von Eschenbach until the FDA issues a decision on Plan B, yes or no," the senators said, referring to FDA's foot-dragging on whether to make the prescription emergency contraceptive available over the counter.

The move suggests that von Eschenbach's nomination, while supported by the device industry, could be at least as contentious as that of former Commissioner Lester Crawford, who resigned ...
