This weekend's Norfolk State Players' production of the socially sharp-edged but comic musical "Purlie" aims to meet director Clarence W. Murray Jr.'s goal for scholastic theater - "to educate while entertaining."
"It's funny, funny slapstick that takes all the stereotypes - the Uncle Tom, the mammy, the old bigot - and lets us laugh at them and also uses them to teach a lesson, like Shakespeare's fool," Murray said.
