STUDIES OF UNUSUAL versus common names provide the basis for understanding the differential significance of unconventionally spelled and conventionally spelled names (e.g., Dyan vs. Diane, Kortney vs. Courtney, or Darin vs. Darren). An unconventionally spelled name is, by cultural definition, a more unusual variant of that name. Indeed, since an unconventionally spelled name is similar to its corresponding conventionally spelled variant in almost all aspects except in spelling, it provides a vehicle for highly controlled studies of unusual names.
