AS I WRITE this column, there are two pictures of my father staring back at me. One is of him in his Royal Navy uniform during World War II, the other taken in Atlanta before he got ill.

Dad's been dead more than ten years, but there's not a day goes by when I don't think of him. When I left home he gave me the same piece of advice his father gave him at the same age.

I suspect it's pretty much identical to the advice most fathers give their sons. It goes something like this: If you can look yourself in the face in the shaving mirror every day, it doesn't matter a damn what the rest of the world thinks about you.
