May 2--In a ceremony on the long-vacant site of the city's worst high-rise fire, construction began this morning on what will be the city's most expensive condominium tower, the Residences at the Ritz Carlton.
Gov. Rendell, speaking at the ceremony, recalled visiting Comcast Chairman Ralph Roberts in the building on the site across from City Hall when he was running for mayor in 1991. The building, One Meridian Plaza, was the Comcast Corp. headquarters at the time. The building burned a few weeks later, killing three city firefighters, Rendell recalled, "and I wondered can anything else bad happen Philadelphia?... Now ...
