Cosmetics contain numerous potential allergens. In addition to fragrances, which are the most common cause of contact allergy because of their presence in many skin care products, preservatives are often cosmetic allergens (see Table 1). Persons who become allergic to these preservatives can have widespread eruptions and may be quite uncomfortable as a result.
To help patients identify their allergies so that they can better avoid the source of the irritants, dermatology professionals often find it necessary to patch test such patients.
