Understanding Mentoring Relationships
The concept of mentoring is not new. Patron systems arose in the arts and humanities, and mentors have long been available for career staging and succession planning in business and industry (Goran, 2001; Yoder, 1990). Practice-based disciplines including medicine and nursing use apprentice mentoring and parallel themes during academic or clinical residency and service internship to teach technical skills and transfer specialized knowledge.
