FROM SCHOOLHOUSE TO JAILHOUSE is a catch phrase with much truth. One third of high school students do not graduate and 77 percent of prison inmates lack high school diplomas. The Alliance for Excellent Education estimates that the lifetime cost to the U.S. of just the class of 2004's high school dropouts--approximately 1.3 million teenagers--will amount to $325 billion in lost wages, taxes, and productivity.
That number does not count the costs of police, judicial, and prison resources for the disproportionate number of high school dropouts who draw on such tax-depleting services.
