The preferences for placing children with relatives and for encouraging familial stability trump concerns that an aging relative will be unable to care for a child for the years of his or her minority. In some jurisdictions these preferences for adoption and foster care are reflected in statutes, while in others they are being promoted judicially.
In In re A.C.G., for example, a great-aunt who had cared for the child since infancy was allowed to adopt her, despite being eighty years old when the child was only nine. ...
