WILSONVILLE, Ore.--Tim McAlear's future may be uncertain, but his place in the history of PayLess Drug Stores and chain drug retailing is secure.
McAlear's six-year tenure at the chain, the last two as president and chief executive officer, have coincided with the company's emergence as one of the most formidable retailers in its trade class. Since he joined PayLess in 1987, it has grown from 214 to 570 stores, becoming the No. 10 drug chain in the nation in terms of store count. Last summer, with McAlear at the helm, PayLess bought the 124-unit Pay 'n Save chain, serving notice that it was determined to become a more prominent player in the industry.
