A VAN GOGH masterpiece has gone under the hammer for more than [pounds sterling]22 million in New York.
L'Arlesienne, Madame Ginoux, sold for $40,336,000 ([pounds sterling]22,410,000), the fourth-highest price paid at auction for a painting by the artist.
At the same auction, Pablo Picasso's portrayal of his Russian ballerina wife Olga Khokhlova, entitled Le Repos, 1932, fetched [pounds sterling]19,300,000 - well above presale estimates.
The 1890 Van Gogh painting of a cafe owner was described as a homage to Paul Gauguin, whose departure from his side in 1888 had deeply depressed Van Gogh.
