May 3--In a ceremony on the long-vacant site of the city's worst high-rise fire, construction began yesterday morning on what will be Philadelphia's most expensive condominium tower, the Residences at the Ritz-Carlton.
Gov. Rendell, speaking at the ceremony, recalled visiting Comcast chairman Ralph Roberts in the building on the site across from City Hall when he was running for mayor in 1991. That building, the 38-story One Meridian Plaza, was Comcast Corp.'s headquarters. It burned a few weeks later, killing three firefighters, Rendell said.
