May 3--PRESTON -- A dispute over cold water near Spring Valley is boiling over into a controversy that has spread to the county and state.
At the heart of it is what's the best use for about 1,800 gallons of cold water that bubble out of a big spring every minute at a trout farm built in the 1940s.
Spring Valley Ponds' new owner, John Bondhus of Monticello, Minn., wants to use that cold water to raise trout, which must have cool water. The fish can be sold commercially or the public could catch them at the pond. He said he has some fish in his ponds that are bigger than some state-record trout.
