Slogging step by slogging step, the city of Eugene continues the expensive and time-consuming task of draining the legal swamp created by its police officer sex abuse scandal.

Last week the city agreed to pay $900,000 to a woman who said former Eugene police officer Roger Magana coerced her into sexual acts over a 2 1/2 -year period. The city now has paid nearly $2 million to seven women who sued for civil rights violations stemming from the criminal conduct of Magana and fellow former officer Juan Lara.

That leaves six lawsuits unsettled and set for trial this summer. It also leaves still glaringly unfulfilled Police ...
