When women shampooed less often, brushing was an effective way of keeping their hair and scalp clean. Plus, it helped distribute natural oils from the roots to the ends, lending some much-desired shine. Now we wash every day or two, and conditioners--with their lipids and humectants--are better than a brush at restoring smoothness and shine, says Richard D.
