The right plants and artificial lighting make the difference

SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO buildings, the once-dim entranceway of this Santa Monica, California, condominium called out for greenery. Natural light was not sufficient for plants to flourish, so designer Stephanie Wilson-Blanc added artificial light and chose plants that require little light.

Overhead metal-halide HID (high-intensity discharge) lights supplement natural light to provide adequate intensity and spectrum of light for photosynthesis, and even flowering in some plants. Lights stay on 12 hours a day.
