May 5--CALCIUM -- An all-around fast response by a number of people Thursday afternoon saved the Microtel, according to Jefferson County's director of fire and emergency management, Gregory T. Brunelle.
The blaze started in mulch, possibly after a cigarette was tossed there, at the southeast corner of the motel, which is at routes 11 and 342 in the town of LeRay. Flames spread to shrubs, and then moved up the outer wall.
A Fort Drum soldier and his wife were at the Woodcreek Apartments, north of the motel, waiting for their child to come home when they noticed the outdoor fire. Suddenly, the smoke turned black and rose ...
