For at least two decades, indoor air quality has loomed on the horizon as a lucrative market for the heating-cooling industry.

The reasoning was: "We, the heating-cooling professionals are the specialist in air handling, for the temperature control of building, and we should become the specialist in the air quality of buildings."

"Hvac contractors have the expertise and facilities to solve sick building syndrome problems when associated with an industrial hygienist and a competent laboratory," says a white paper produced by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA).
