May 6--When Billie Jean King helped draw up the concept for World Team Tennis, one of the motivating factors was to showcase a sport with true gender equity. The league made its debut in 1974 with men and women as teammates and both having the same impact on the outcome of a match. World Team Tennis has endured some rocky moments, along with a two-year hiatus in 1979 and 1980, but for the most part it's been a summer staple, squeezed into three weeks in July.
