May 6--McALLEN -- State Trooper Edward Chavez's death is a reminder of the dangers officers face every time they get behind the wheel.
Vehicle accidents have now surpassed gunfire accidents as the leading cause of death for law enforcement officers, according to statistics from two national law enforcement groups.
"Whenever anyone gets in their car on any given day they are taking their life into their hands," said DPS spokesman Tom Vinger, who is based in Austin. "Driving by its very nature is dangerous. Obviously, for law enforcement the danger increases dramatically."
