The largest body of brackish water in the world, the Baltic Sea, has severe problems of water pollution and environmental degradation.(1) As late as 1950, the Baltic Sea was still regarded as environmentally "healthy." Since that time, however, the situation has changed dramatically. In spite of numerous protective efforts, the Baltic Sea's rich bio-diversity is threatened by environmental pollution that could cause irreversible damage to a sea that is an important source of economic activity and recreation for more than 80 million people who live along its coast and within its catchment area.
