Article: Controlling groundwater VOCs: do nanoscale ZVI particles have any advantages over microscale ZVI or BNP?

Nanotechnology--nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) in particular--entered the field of contaminated site remediation a few years ago. Research is still actively being conducted in the United States to better understand the advantages of using nanoscale versus microscale particles, as well as the fate and transport of nanoparticles once released into the environment.

Zero-valent iron is used to treat many organic contaminants that can be completely reduced to non-toxic compounds, such as ethene and ethane. NZVI particles have proven to be more reactive and effective partially because of their increased surface area compared to granular, coarser iron particles.
