Researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, have developed boron nitride nanoparticles for use in boron neutron capture, an experimental therapy for treating certain brain cancers. The nanoparticles increase the amount of boron that gets into tumour cells, an achievement that could lead to better treatment regimes, the researchers say.

First developed in the 1950s, boron neutron capture therapy involves administering a boron-containing compound and then irradiating tumours in which the boron compound has become concentrated. This is done using high-energy neutrons from a small nuclear reactor.
