New league, same reputation: Saints bring prestige, recognition to newly formed American Association.

May 9--The St. Paul Saints were regarded as the flagship franchise of the Northern League, and team founder Mike Veeck enjoyed the prestige of that label for 13 years. But Veeck never let the stature of his independent baseball team get in the way of a bold business move.

Realizing the time had come to break away from the league he helped start, Veeck persuaded four teams last September to follow him to new territory -- the American Association -- once known as a prominent Class AAA stop for major league organizations. The American Association is a new 10-team independent league, and the Saints again are carrying the flagship card. ...
