IN MAY AND JUNE 1919 almost every Canadian and most American daily newspapers presented the Winnipeg General Strike in flaming editorials, gripping headlines, and news reports as a One Big Union (1)-Bolshevik plot to topple constituted authority and replace it with a Soviet-style form of government. In describing the walkout, newspaper owners and their editors as well as many employers and government officials appeared to be caught up in the extremism of the Red Scare.
