In response to concerns that global warming is damaging their habitat, the federal government is considering listing polar bears under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species. In February, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that protection may be necessary, and it began a review process to consider if the bears should be listed. During that sixty-day process, the agency was to study issues relating to polar bear population distribution and habitat, climate change, and potential threats from development, poaching, and pollution.
