MOTHERS and babies are being put at risk by ballooning NHS deficits, a leading midwife said yesterday.
Dame Karlene Davis, general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, called on the Government to take urgent action 'to prevent tragedies occurring'.
The warning follows the revelation that almost half of all health trusts are not replacing midwives who leave the service.
Research by the RCM also shows that more than one in three hospitals are cutting budgets for maternity care as the NHS cash crisis continues to deepen.
