Dear Editor: In my judgment, the current mumps outbreak is indeed a serious development.

Mumps is an early childhood illness and usually is not serious when left to naturally run its course and recovery, leaving a tremendous bonus of superior immunity.

The very fact that most of the current cases are occurring in 18- to 25-year-old adults speaks volumes about the effectiveness, or ineffectiveness, of the mumps vaccine, if these individuals were vaccinated as youngsters.
