When I was 4 years old, we lived next door to my grandmother. My mother, it seemed, lived in the kitchen. She was forever steaming brightly colored vegetables, carefully placing them in tiny, porcelain bowls, then presenting them to Grandma, so she'd have a nice hot lunch. For dessert, there was a crunchy green salad, with velvety Russian dressing made from scratch. And sometimes she let me help make it.
