Many of the world's historic buildings were commissioned by the rulers of the day, who sought a lasting monument to their memory. In the case of the pyramids at Giza, they also fulfilled a religious undertaking, and with the Taj Mahal, we have an exquisite example of architectural symmetry that overrides the building's functional purpose as a royal mausoleum.
