Introduction
The importance of negative ion mass spectrometry has increased since the advent of chemical ionization (CI) and fast atom bombardment (FAB) methods (1-3). More recently, the proliferation of mass spectrometers equipped with electrospray ionization (ESI) and quadrupole, ion trap, or time-of-flight mass analyzers has allowed negative ions to be studied as easily as positive ions. Using ESI-MS, negative ions are easily generated from solutions of molecules containing readily ionizable functional groups (4). The approach has been applied successfully to fatty acids (5, 6), peptides (7-11), and pharmaceuticals containing carboxylic acids (12).
