Dan Kapanke came to the state Senate to be himself.

The La Crosse Republican -- elected in 2004 to fill a vacancy created when Democratic Sen. Mark Meyer was appointed to the Public Service Commission -- has a solid way of making sure that his position in the State Capitol doesn't change him.

"I told three or four of my farmer friends who are very up front that if you ever see that Dan Kapanke has changed, you take that bat and -- right between the eyes with it," he said. "None of them has had to do that yet."
