May 14--CINCINNATI -- Surprised? Ken Williams isn't. He probably knows Phillies centerfielder Aaron Rowand better than anybody. In a telephone interview Friday, Williams, the Chicago White Sox general manager, recalled a conversation he had a few years ago with Gary Pettis, the White Sox' outfield and baserunning instructor. Pettis had just finished a workout with Rowand, who was in the Sox farm system. Pettis told Williams: "We were talking about how to play a ball as you get close to the wall.
