COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Big Lots Inc. spent fiscal 2005 attempting to improve its prospects following a dismal 2004, when the closeout retailer saw its profits plunge 64.4%. Under the leadership of Steve Fishman, who was named chairman and chief executive in July 2005, the company has taken stock of its assets and put in motion a number of strategies to improve its bottom line.
