Pentagon acquisition czar Kenneth Krieg last week gave his approval for the Air Force to initiate the program to recapitalize its aging aerial refueling fleet after several years of delays caused by the fallout over a controversial lease proposal and an acquisition scandal.

Krieg's go-ahead, reflected in an acquisition decision memorandum (ADM) that he signed on April 13, "directs the Air Force to begin the requirements and acquisition process for tanker recapitalization." He directed the Air Force to proceed with "a traditional competitive program to gain the best value for the taxpayer."
