Last year, the state recorded the lowest number of abortions since 1974, when numbers began to be tracked.
While the news is heartening, the decline shouldn't be a cause for great celebration. The numbers may not indicate fewer unintended pregnancies in the state.
The decline in abortions in Wisconsin also should not draw attention away from a worrying trend. It's mostly women in the 20-24 age group and women with lower levels of education -- and thus lower income -- who continue to get unintentionally pregnant and have abortions.
