A Situational Approach to Managing People
Effective leaders know that there is no one best way to manage people. They adapt their style according to the development level of the people they are managing.
In my first management job, I had an employee named Bonnie who was a problem for me. I never got the kind of productivity I should have--particularly in one area of her performance: her paperwork.
As soon as I realized there was a problem, I lavished my attention on Bonnie. I devoted more of my time to her than to all my other employees combined. It didn't work, however; my style was ineffective at getting her to improve. When I finally left that job ...
