The occurrence of insulin resistance and the components of insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) are rising in children (Steinberger & Daniels, 2003). Insulin resistance is a defective metabolic response to either exogenous or endogenous insulin. It is thought to be the body's response to a cellular dysfunction in glucose metabolism (Stuart et al., 1986). This dysfunction in glucose metabolism results in a higher plasma insulin concentration level than would be expected related to the existing plasma glucose level (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 1998).
