Canadian independent Nexen and its partner Chevron confirmed a "significant discovery" in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday but Devon Energy was less fortunate, striking out with a couple of uncommercial wells offshore Angola. Nexen said the well, drilled on its Knotty Head prospect in Green Canyon Block 512, encountered 600 feet of net oil pay in multiple zones. With a total depth of 34,189 feet, it is the deepest well drilled to date in the Gulf of Mexico.
Analysts estimate that Knotty Head could hold upwards of 300 million barrels of oil equivalent of recoverable reserves.
