BELOW decks on the City of Adelaide, only the promise of a new life on the other side of the world sustained James Anderson McLauchlan.
A working man, he was used to hardship in life, but the harrowing conditions on board the clipper, taking nearly 300 Scots emigrants to Australia, were sometimes too much even for him.
It was literally life and death during his passage in 1874. Babies were born to exhausted parents; children and adults alike passed away, their bodies sewn into sailcloths and covered by the Union Jack before being slipped into the deep as the captain read a prayer.
