Taking Advanced Placement courses does not significantly increase performance in college introductory biology, chemistry and physics classes, according to a four-year study of 18,000 students conducted by University of Virginia and Harvard University researchers. Freshmen who hadn't taken AP courses scored an average of 82 on introductory science exams; those who had scored a 4 on AP tests averaged 87; and those who registered a top AP score of 5 averaged 90 on the college tests.
