His heroism was the stuff of a Boy's Own adventure - his very British modesty meant he rarely spoke of it.
One of the region's unsung heroes, Norman Waters, saw action at Arnhem, Dunkirk and El Alamein.
Sadly he has died in Newcastle's RVI and here the quiet man's story is re-told.
He was so well thought of he had recently been made President of the Tyneside Branch of the Parachute Regiment, an honour he was extremely proud of.
Norman was born in Ryton in 1919 and went to Crookhill School.
