May 20--BALTIMORE -- Barbaro left his stall at the Fair Hill Training Center and walked slowly and steadily past his barnmates. Once outside, the colt stopped and checked out a dozen onlookers.
"Take him over to the grass," trainer Michael Matz said just after noon yesterday. "Let him eat."
Matz had just been talking about the pleasures of Fair Hill, where a bald eagle sometimes is spotted soaring above the training grounds, and "this morning, there was a big red fox just past the far side of the track, just looking for mice."
Under a passing rain shower, Barbaro was loaded on a horse van for the trip to Pimlico ...
