May 21--BALTIMORE -- With her horse flailing a few feet away and people screaming and weeping around her, Gretchen Jackson stood stone-faced and stoic. She did not cry. She did not shout. She simply stared at the horror. There is little worse in sports than the breakdown of a thoroughbred racehorse. Barbaro's tragic run at the Preakness yesterday, when he broke bones above and below the ankle of his right hind leg, was another reminder of just how fragile these 1,000-pound beasts are.
