May 21--Chris Coste made it.
Finally, finally, finally.
The Phillies announced today that infielder Alex S. Gonzalez, who never took to his reserve role with the Phillies, had voluntarily retired. He had just four hits and 10 strikeouts in 36 at-bats this season. They replaced Gonzalez with Coste, the team's final cut this spring and who could make his big-league debut today at 33.
The Phillies signed Gonzalez to a one-year, $750,000 contract in February, and hoped he would bolster their bench with his ability to play third base, shortstop and first base. But Gonzalez, who had been an everyday player since he broke ...
