The 191-foot seiner Bettie M, which cost $3.25 million to build just four years ago, meets an ignominious end when she runs aground by the mouth of the Columbia River carrying 900 tons of tuna. Gale-force winds and rising seas frustrated the efforts of the tug Salvage Chief to free the 997 ton vessel, and by the time the Chief was able to turn her bow-on and move her seaward, several days of pounding took their toll, and the Bettie M opened up by the engine room and rolled.
