May 22--Chris Coste finally made it. The Phillies announced yesterday that infielder Alex S. Gonzalez, who never took to his reserve role, has retired. He had just four hits and 10 strikeouts in 36 at-bats. The team replaced Gonzalez with Coste, the Phils' final cut this spring, who could make his big-league debut this week at age 33. "I never did give up hope," said Coste, who is actually two months older than Gonzalez. The Phillies signed Gonzalez to a one-year, $750,000 contract in February, and hoped he would bolster their bench with his ability to play third base, shortstop and first base.
