I am an immigrant from Belarus, and I am often asked about my best and worst experiences in Eugene. Let me save the best for later, and tell you about the worst.

A year ago, a Russian kid was hospitalized with broken ribs after being beaten at Jefferson Middle School and called a "Russian pig" by his classmates. This paper published a front-page story; I don't want to hype the episode. Everybody knows how sensitive some Eugeneans are: If a courthouse doesn't have a ramp, expect hundreds of letters. So here is the worst part: I saw one (one!) letter in the newspaper about the kid.
