May 24--TO SOME, THAT SNAP LANCE
Gower heard last Saturday as he launched himself skyward from earth in the pole vault event at the West Virginia state high school track championships was the sound of a pole breaking.
To Gower and his pole vaulting coach, Jeff Core, it was more a heart breaking.
Forget for a moment that when he broke not one pole, but also a second pole, as freakish an occurrence as you will ever see in a sporting event, his chance at the state championship he could have won was over.
That was heartbreaking enough, but Gower was vaulting not only for that day but for a thousand tomorrows.
