Deer ticks are biting in more Minnesota counties than before, prompting state health officials to alert residents to the seasonal risk of Lyme disease. Lyme cases in the state were down 10 percent in 2005 from the record 1,023 the year before. But the geographic range of cases appears to have spread outward from east-central Minnesota and the Mississippi River valley in southeastern Minnesota, their traditional habitat. Lyme disease is spread by deer ticks infected with certain bacteria.
The disease can cause debilitating arthritis as well as serious heart and nervous system problems.
